DISARMED WITHOUT HARM
REMOVING THE WEAPON. ADDRESSING THE REASON IT WAS CARRIED.
A young person can be physically disarmed and still remain psychologically armed.
Removing a knife matters. But if the fear, humiliation, retaliation, exploitation, peer pressure or perceived need for protection remain untouched, the risk may remain too.
Disarmed Without Harm is RAP Academy's public-facing approach to helping professionals, families and young people understand what sits behind weapon carrying — and what can make a safer response possible.
Core philosophy
WEAPON → WHY → RISK → RESPONSE → CHANGE
WEAPON
- What is being carried?
- What immediate danger exists?
WHY
- Fear?
- Retaliation?
- Protection?
- Peer pressure?
- Exploitation?
- Status?
RISK
- What could happen next?
- Who else is involved?
- Is the situation escalating?
RESPONSE
- What can safely interrupt the pattern?
- What practical protection is needed?
- What professional intervention is required?
CHANGE
- What needs to change so that carrying no longer feels necessary?
THE KNIFE MAY BE VISIBLE.
THE REASON FOR CARRYING IT MAY NOT BE.
Effective knife-harm prevention has to address both.
Confiscation may remove the immediate weapon. Sustainable change requires attention to the fear, pressure, relationships, environment and decision-making patterns around it.

I THINK THEY MAY BE CARRYING A KNIFE
FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
WHEN CARRYING FEELS LIKE PROTECTION
Straight-talking support for young people dealing with fear, pressure, conflict, retaliation or the belief that carrying a weapon is the only way to stay safe.
The central belief
IT'S FOR PROTECTION.
For some young people, carrying a knife is not initially experienced as aggression. It is experienced as protection.
"I'm not looking for trouble."
"I just need something in case they come."
That belief must be taken seriously — but not accepted as safe. Carrying can increase the likelihood that the next confrontation becomes more serious.
Less useful question
"Why are you carrying a knife?"
More useful question
"What are you frightened might happen if you don't?"
DISARMING MORE THAN THE WEAPON
Disarm the fear.
Disarm the pressure.
Disarm the retaliation.
Disarm the belief that violence equals protection.
Disarm the idea that walking away means weakness.
Disarm the conditions that make carrying feel necessary.
Because removing a weapon is important.
Removing the need for it is the deeper work.

THE MOMENT BEFORE THE WEAPON BECOMES THE RESPONSE
STIMULUS
SPACE
RESPONSE
Weapon carrying can emerge from a sequence of decisions.
Stimulus. The stimulus might be a threat, assault, humiliation or message.
Space. Inside the space may sit fear, anger, peer pressure, reputation or the belief that nobody else can provide protection.
Response. The response may become carrying a weapon.
The intervention question is:
What other responses can become visible inside that space?

IMMEDIATE RISK
If someone is at immediate risk of serious harm, or there is reason to believe a weapon may be used imminently, do not rely on online guidance alone. Follow appropriate safeguarding procedures and contact the relevant emergency or statutory service.
